Theoretical Modeling of Weakly Lensed Polarized Radio Sources

چکیده
In this paper we present the theoretical basis for the modeling of weakly gravitationally lensed extended sources that are polarized. This technique has been used in the past to constrain the mass profiles of galaxies projected against the jet of the quasar 3C9. Since then, work has been done to improve both the measurement and theoretical modeling of the lensing signal, which manifests itself as an alignment breaking between the morphology and the polarization, parametrized as ηG . To this end, we present the mathematical derivation of the theoretical value of ηG as well as numerical simulations of expected signals in polarized radio jets. We use the radio jet sources 3C9 and 1253+104 as illustrative examples of the measurement and modeling of the ηG signal. For 3C9, we present constraints on the parameters of the two intervening lenses and quantify their confidence intervals. One lens has no measured redshift and in this case, we show the dependence of mass and mass-to-light ratio on assumed redshift. Gravitationally Lensed μJy Radio Sources towards Galaxy Clusters
Galaxy clusters are expected to gravitationally lens background radio sources. However, due to the smaller surface density of radio sources, when compared to optical galaxies, such lensed events are rare. For an example, it is expected that there is no lensed radio source due to foreground galaxy clusters in the 1.4 GHz VLA FIRST survey. However, at the μJy level, the surface density of radio s...
متن کاملCosmology with Galaxy Clusters III. Gravitationally Lensed Arc Statistics as a Cosmological Probe
We calculate the expected number of gravitationally lensed optical, radio and sub-mm lensed sources on the whole sky due to foreground galaxy clusters for different cosmological models. We improve previous calculations of lensed arc statistics by including redshift information for background sources and accounting for the redshift evolution of the foreground lensing clusters. The background sou...
متن کاملCosmological Parameters from Statistics of Strongly Lensed Radio Sources
We calculate the expected number of strongly lensed radio sources in a sample of ∼ 6500 sources observed with the Very Large Array as part of the Cosmic Lens All Sky Survey (CLASS) during the first two sessions of its observations. A comparison between the predicted and the observed number of lensed radio sources allows a determination of the current value of Ωm − ΩΛ, where Ωm is the cosmologic...
متن کاملSearch for Radio Arcs in Aco Clusters
Gravitational lensing (GL) of distant radio sources by galaxy clusters should produce radio arc(let)s. We extracted radio sources from the FIRST survey near Abell cluster cores and found their radio position angles to be uniformly distributed with respect to the cluster centres. This result holds even when we restrict the sample to the richest or most centrally condensed clusters, and to source...
متن کاملGravitationally Lensed Sub-mm Sources towards Galaxy Clusters
Recent observations of galaxy clusters with the SCUBA instrument on the James Clarke Maxwell Telescope have revealed a sample of gravitationally lensed sources at sub-mm wavelengths. We extend our previous calculation on the expected number of lensed optical arcs and radio sources to study the sub-mm lensed source statistics due to foreground massive clusters. For a flat cosmology with Ωm = 0.4...
